Pre-WW1 Medals from Italy
Italian medals, awards, and decorations of the pre-WW1 period
In the pre-World War I period, Italy was a relatively young nation, having been unified in 1861. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were marked by efforts to modernize the economy and assert itself as a European power. Politically, the era saw the rise of liberal governments, industrialization, and social reforms, but also significant social unrest and emigration due to economic difficulties.
Militarily, Italy sought to expand its influence through colonial ventures, notably in Africa. This period saw the issuance of several medals to honor military and civil service. The Medaglia al Valore Militare (Medal of Military Valor) was awarded for acts of bravery, while the Ordine della Corona d’Italia (Order of the Crown of Italy) recognized civil and military merits. These medals reflected Italy’s aspirations to consolidate national unity and assert its presence on the international stage.
