Interwar Medals from Italy

Italian medals, awards, and decorations of the interwar period

During the interwar period, Italy experienced significant political and social upheaval. After World War I, Italy faced economic difficulties, social unrest, and dissatisfaction with the territorial gains from the Treaty of Versailles.

This discontent fueled the rise of Benito Mussolini and the Fascist Party, who capitalized on the public’s desire for stability and national pride. In 1922, Mussolini became Prime Minister after the March on Rome, eventually establishing a totalitarian regime. Fascist policies aimed to strengthen Italy’s economy, military, and national identity, while suppressing political opposition and promoting aggressive nationalism, leading to Italy’s involvement in conflicts such as the invasion of Ethiopia and participation in the Spanish Civil War. This period set the stage for Italy’s alliance with Nazi Germany and entry into World War II.

from the Interwar Period

During the interwar period, Italy introduced several medals to recognize service and achievements, reflecting the era’s political climate.

One notable medal was the Medaglia Commemorativa della Guerra Italo-Austriaca 1915–1918, commemorating World War I service. Another important decoration was the Medaglia dell’Unità d’Italia, celebrating the unification of Italy, which was often awarded during significant anniversaries.

The Fascist regime also created the Medaglia d’Onore per le Madri di Famiglie Numerose, honoring mothers with numerous children, emphasizing Mussolini’s focus on increasing Italy’s population. These medals were part of a broader effort to promote national pride, military valor, and the Fascist ideology during Mussolini’s rule.
