Medals from the Kingdom of Württemberg

Württemberg Badges, Decorations & Awards

The Kingdom of Württemberg was established in 1806 when Duke Frederick II of Württemberg was elevated to King Frederick I by Napoleon Bonaparte following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. This elevation was part of Napoleon’s reorganization of German territories. Württemberg initially allied with Napoleon and became a member of the Confederation of the Rhine. After Napoleon’s defeat, Württemberg joined the German Confederation in 1815, following the Congress of Vienna.

Württemberg adopted a constitution in 1819, establishing a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral parliament consisting of the Landtag (Diet). This allowed for some degree of representative government while maintaining the authority of the king.

Württemberg, as part of the German Empire, was heavily involved in World War I. The war’s devastation led to political and social upheaval within the kingdom. The defeat of Germany in the Great War triggered the German Revolution, leading to the abdication of King William II of Württemberg. The monarchy was abolished, and Württemberg became part of the Weimar Republic as the Free People’s State of Württemberg.
