Saxony Badges, Decorations & Awards

The Kingdom of Saxony was a significant state in Central Europe, known for its cultural, political, and economic influence. It existed from 1806 to 1918, playing a crucial role in German and European history.

The Kingdom was established in 1806 when Elector Frederick Augustus III of Saxony declared himself King Frederick Augustus I. This occurred after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, largely influenced by Napoleon Bonaparte’s reorganization of German states.

Saxony initially allied with Napoleon during the Napoleonic Wars, joining the Confederation of the Rhine. After Napoleon’s defeat in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, Saxony switched sides and joined the coalition against him. The Kingdom adopted a constitution in 1831, establishing a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral parliament. The House of Wettin, one of Europe’s oldest dynasties, ruled Saxony throughout its existence as a kingdom.
