Luxembourg, a small but strategically significant country in Western Europe, has a rich and tumultuous history, particularly in terms of its military engagements and defenses. The origins of Luxembourg date back to 963 AD when Siegfried, Count of Ardennes, acquired a rocky promontory and built a castle, which became the foundation of Luxembourg City. Over the centuries, Luxembourg grew in importance due to its strategic location and fortifications.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Luxembourg was often caught in the struggles between larger European powers. The House of Luxembourg produced several notable Holy Roman Emperors, including Henry VII and his son, Charles IV. During this period, Luxembourg was frequently involved in regional conflicts and power struggles. 

In the late 18th century, Luxembourg was annexed by Revolutionary France and, in 1839, the Treaty of London divided Luxembourg, ceding the western part to Belgium but confirming the remaining Grand Duchy’s independence. In 1867, the Second Treaty of London declared Luxembourg a neutral territory and led to the dismantling of its fortress.
